From 1929 Orange Marmalade Recipe

From 1929 Orange Marmalade Recipe

A recipe from the first year of the Great Depression.

96-year-old Orange Marmalade recipe!

Recipe as written in Ladies Home Journal.

Orange Marmalade

  • Slice very thin 6 oranges and 3 lemons. Cover with water and allow to stand over night.

  • The next morning, boil this mixture 45 minutes. Let stand overnight again.

  • In the morning, measure and bring to boil and add one-and-a-half times as much sugar. Boil for 45 minutes. Add one-half to one Cup lemon juice.

  • Jar and seal.

And that's all they wrote!

Presumably this Great Depression Era recipe was primarily used by people living in the warmer parts of the U.S. - money was tight & citrus fruit was hard to get in places it didn't grow naturally!
